Are Wireless Routers Faster Than Wired Counterparts

By: Joe R. Maldonado

Actually, The answer to this question in all honesty is “ It depends”. Wireless routers provide users with mobility, but are they in actuality any faster than wired modems. No, not really, this is debated far and wide yet the side by side comparisons shows that they are just about neck and neck.

This is true because your Internet speed is determined by what you are currently receiving from your ISP. If you have a service plan in the higher echelons of course you will experience greater speeds than your peers. Even then outside forces will have an effect on what speed you actually receive.

While the numbers nay say one thing it has no bearing on the reality of each individual situation. Speed is determined by the slowest link in the data transfer chain. Your router may actually have a higher bandwidth than that of your ISP connection. Your hard drive could also be the cause of your slower speed. The n there is poor signal strength coming straight from the tower. All of this affects the bottom line.

If all you do is browse on the Internet or play a few games it is possible you will notice the discrepancy, but only fleetingly so. If you are using your connection for major work and downloading big file loads then of course it will make a bigger difference. If your connection promises blazing speeds and you are experiencing only a trickle you have to consider if maybe your wireless router is the hold up.

Data networking professionals all agree that a wired network is faster in connectivity than a wireless router system. There are reasons why, that are not common knowledge. A wireless router connects several devices to the same signal. The signal is then spit between each device which by logic alone calls for it to be a little slower.

Wired networks mostly use the Ethernet protocols for data communication. They generally have bandwidth speeds that start at 10Mb per second all the way up to 1000. These are what you are bound to find in most offices. It sends and receives data simultaneously.

The ISP offers a maximum of broadband speed up to 1.5MB per second. This defines the rate at which data is uploaded and downloaded. The router just takes different packets of data and distributes it from the Internet to whichever device is requesting the data. If you have several devices on at the same time the speed will be reduced exponentially.

The more device the more the signal must split and this will cause a speed bottleneck within your network. With DSL and cable to include other devices they would each need their own line, which means separate signals, this alone makes it faster.

Answers are never as cut and dry or as simplistic as the questions they precipitate them. Finding out what works best is more about the uses you have for it. Speed after all, is relative.

How To Make FireFox Faster

Firefox is an excellent browser and is one of my favourites.Besides, the huge number of add ons that it provides with makes it more special. However, the add ons can also have a negative impact and can hamper the actual speed of the browser .So here are a few tricks to increase browsing speed in firefox.
8 hacks to make Firefox ridiculously fast
FireFox

1.Flash Block

If you want you can also block flash as flash is “just evil”. Just install the FlashBlock extension. And if there is any flash that you anyway want to see just click the button and it will start.

Then, restart Firefox and experience how much faster it is.

2.Remove Unused Extensions

Extensions can leak memory and have a negative effect on the performance of Firefox.

  • Uninstall extensions you are not using.
  • Check the list of problematic extensions and either uninstall or disable while not in use.
  • Extensions should also be disabled while not in use.

3.Increase Cache Size

I should have given this at the top since this greatly decreases loading time of webpages.Believe me,I know this because I myself have a low speed connection and this tip is the most effective.
As you browse the web so Firefox stores site images and scripts in a local memory cache, where they can be speedily retrieved if you revisit the same page. If you have plenty of RAM (2 GB of more), leave Firefox running all the time and regularly return to pages then you can improve performance by increasing this cache size. Type about:config and press [Enter], then right-click anywhere in the window and select New > Integer. Type browser.cache.memory.capacity, click OK, enter 65536 and click OK, then restart your browser to get the new, larger cache.

4.Data Compression

If you have a low speed data connection like me I am pretty sure that you often get frustrated about staring at white space while your webpage is loading .Well dont worry at all.Install toonel.net (toonel.net) and this clever Java applet will re-route your web traffic through its own server, compressing it at the same time, so theres much less to download. And it can even compress JPEGs by allowing you to reduce their quality. This all helps to cut your data transfer, useful if youre on a limited 1 GB-per-month account, and can at best double your browsing performance.

5.Install TraceMonkey

TraceMonkey is a new Firefox feature that converts slow Javascript into super-speedy x86 code, and so lets it run some functions anything up to 20 times faster than the current version. Its still buggy so isnt available in the regular Firefox download yet, but if youre willing to risk the odd crash or two then theres an easy way to try it out.
Install the latest nightly build (ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/), launch it, type about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Type JIT in the filter box, then double-click javascript.options.jit.chrome and javascript.options.jit.content to change their values to true, and thats it - youre running the fastest Firefox Javascript engine ever.

6.Enable Pipelining

Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return.
Look for “network.http.keep-alive”. If it’s false, double-click that line and to change it to true.

Make sure “network.http.version” is set to “1.1″.
3

Look for “network.http.pipelining”. If it’s false, double-click that line and change it to true.

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to 8 by double-clicking it. This means it will make 8 requests at once. There is no point setting it higher then 8 as it is capped at 8 max. The default value for this setting is 4.

Boot Ubuntu Linux faster by reducing TTY virtual consoles

Most of us never use all the virtual consoles(TTY) that is provided with most Linux distribution. Why leave it there and let it eat memory. You can decrease startup time by removing unwanted virtual console or TTY.

Removing some virtual consoles or reducing TTY is very easy.

Just follow the procedure below:

  • sudo -s
  • vi /etc/default/console-setup
  • change ACTIVE_CONSOLES=”/dev/tty[1-6]” to your choice. Lets say if you want only two TTY or virtual console then change to ACTIVE_CONSOLES=”/dev/tty[1-2]”
  • cd /etc/event.d
  • Comment on all the lines in ttyx file that you dont need. In this example tty3-tty6

Reboot to see the change.

Not long after releasing Streak Dell, Dell re-issued a variant of Streak, Dell Streak 2 That comes with the screen performance and a faster chipset. Some sources say Dell Streak 2 will feature the Same screen size as the original, but the resolution will be upped to high-definition. A display of the rumored 1280x800 Would be a huge improvement over the original with a faster chipset a dual-core 1.2 GHz, an upgrade from the current 1 GHz Snapdragon processor.

Not yet known what the improved features of Dell Streak 2, but which clearly apart from the increase in screen and the chipset used, there would be an additional feature.

Download Torrents Faster Via HTTP

I use the website torrific.com to download my torrents. How it works is, you give the site the torrent file and it will download it from the seeders. Once the download is complete you can use your browser to download the file via HTTP. The main advantage I find in it is if other user of the site has already downloaded the file, I dont have have to wait for the torrent to complete download. Rather I get the HTTP link instantly. It uses file has to check if the file has been downloaded.

What are the sites of similar nature you use?
