Marvel Universe 3 75 World War Hulk Wave 12 Series 3

I just cant get enough of this look for the (not so) Jolly Green Giant!  This was probably the Hulks best moment in recent years and all that recent stuff about the Red Hulk and the Fall of the Hulks kinda sets the Hulk character back a couple of years, as if hed had this whole interplanetary episode and then forgot about it.

How could he?  He should be way MORE dangerous than before because of the whole Planet Hulk experience.  Thinking about it just makes me mad.  And when Im mad, I get angry...And when Im I angry I..I..WWWRRRREEEAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHH!!!!!  HULK SMAAAAAAAAAASSSSSH!!!!

Oh, er, sorry.  Where were we?  Oh yes, the review.  Im glad they gave this Hulk a 3.75" version.  The King Hulk 6" Marvel Legends version is awesome, as is the Face Off release.  So why shouldnt this one be?

Like: Weapons and accessories.  Marvel Universe figures seldom come with much else other than figure stand and perhaps one other accessory--either a shield or a blast effect--most of the time its because its an item that defines the character.  Theres Thors hammer, Caps shield, Thunderballs...uh..ball...  These are things that these guys gotta have.  World War Hulk here doesnt necessarily need his weapons, at least not both of them and a shield, but he gets them anyway.  Yay for us! :)

Like: The excellent ensemble of parts that make the main sculpt, his loincloth, harness, and weapons.  All these are brand new pieces, with detail that puts the 6" version to shame.  The weapons and shield have nicks and cuts and all sorts of battle wear, the leathers and loincloth have tooling to bring out their texture, while his armor and skin also bear the same combat wear.  Simply a marvel to behold.

Also, World War Hulks chest and torso is much less broad compared to previous Marvel Universe releases, while his arms are not as huge and ape-like.  This is excellent and true to the comic art, in which Hulk has less bestial and more human proportions.

Like: The brilliant wash over most of the figure.  Theres a rust brown wash on his armored parts: just enough for wear, and his face and skin have also been given dark shading to bring out the muscles and leathery texture.  His leathers and other brown areas are the only unwashed parts, but with all the detailed tooling on them, I can hardly hold it against Hasbro.  Lets put it this way--WWH has more washed than unwashed parts, and that certainly doesnt mean hes got good hygiene habits.

Like: That his large left shoulder guard is part of his harness instead of his arm.  This way, theres a better range of motion for his arm, looks like hes wearing it on his shoulder instead of being part of the arm or the shoulder (thereby restricting its movement).   The harness is a separate piece, and therefore adjustable.  What works great is that I can move his arm, then set the shoulder guard on it.  This makes it easy to look really great.

His shield clips onto the scabbard!
Like: That he has a usable sheathe!  Its part of his harness as well, and houses the lengthy blade snugly. The sheathe is also a good place to clip on his shield, which has a clip that fit perfectly on the scabbard as it does his wrist.

Dislike: That he cant hold his weapons properly because his grip is too big!  Shocking!  This is a big problem. It almost meaningless if you give a figure a ton of stuff that he just cant use/hold onto.  Thankfully he only drops his weapons when his hands are turned downwards.  But still, he shouldnt drop weapons meant for him at all.

Dislike: Well, sorta.  Im not sure I like his head sculpt.  It doesnt have the super large upper lip thats characteristic of the brooding King Hulk.  His eyes are a little too big, and his mouth is open?  I guess World War Hulk does have his mouth partway open in the comics like that.  Combined with the eyes on the figure, it makes him look like hes a deer in the headlights.  Its brood or bash, I say, brood or BAAAAAAAASH!!!

Like: The thigh cuts and double-jointed knees!  Talk about a marked improvement from the previous Marvel Universe versions!  The Green, Gray, Red, and Secret Wars Green all were very stable but also very rigid in terms of waist down articulation.  But WWH here has sacrificed very little of that stability and added tons of flexibility.  The joints are all nice and tight, but beware of over twisting his ball-jointed legs or they might pop off.  But if that ever happens no worries, they pop right back on. ;)

Like: The hinge/ball combo for his head and the swivel at the base of his neck!  When I busted him out of the package, I was initially disappointed that he could only look down.  Then I realized his neck might have been attached backwards. So I swiveled the neck piece 180 degrees and viola!  He looks up and down perfectly.

I dont know if this is the case for all the World War Hulk figures, but I think its a safe bet to say it is.  Not to worry, though.  Its a really quick fix that doesnt require any tools--just your fingers and some good old-fashioned elbow grease (ie. twisting). ;)

RATINGS

Aesthetics: 9.5/10 - Theres no way you cant love this Conanesque look for the Hulk.  Throw in excellent tooling on the majority of his parts, and a very comic book accurate and proportionate sculpt, and we have a winner!.

If theres one thing to pick on,  its the face.  The look they gave the King Hulk 6" Marvel Legends version was spot on, so perhaps Hasbro didnt want the 3.75" figure to be a miniaturized carbon copy of its larger 6" predecessor and produced this wider-eyed, scowly faced version.  Funny the thing with the head is that the more I look at it, the more like it.

Theres very little paint on WWH, with only his eyes, circlet, and all silver parts painted.  And what theyve painted, theyve painted well.  The armored parts especially deserve mention, because its done so well that after a wash of darker paint, you cant tell whats painted and whats not.

Poseability: 9.5/10 - World War Hulk might not be able to hold his weapons well, but he has a sheathe!  What about them thigh cuts?  Simply awesome, baby!  Add some nice, tight ball joints at the legs and double hinges at the knees and youve got some amazing leg movement.

World War Hulk may already look great posed by himself, but when posed with others, hes exceptional!  You also cant deny WWHs excellent head movement, as well as a great waist swivel and chest pivot combo.  Theres only two other Marvel Universe figures that share the same combo: Spiderman and Captain America.  That all three figures have great poseability is due in no small part to the chest/waist movement!

WWH would receive a perfect score, except for being unable to grip weapons properly at all.  Imagine GI Joes who cant hold their guns right.  Theyd be simply frustrating to play with!  As for the upper body, the elbows get a good 90 degree bend, but shoulder his hinges are restricted in the front by his big chest, as is normal with a bulky figure like Hulk.

Fun: 10/10 - Hulks are always fun, as any Hulk fan would tell you.  But this Hulk is especially fun because hes got weapons, a shield, a removable harness and a separate belt/loincloth combo. The latter cant be removed without some effort, but unless youre stripping him down for spare parts, thats not going to be a problem at all.

World War Hulk is also good fun because he can (and has) fought everyone.  The Illuminati, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Hulkbuster Iron Man, and of course, the Sentry.  It would be especially interesting to hunt down all the members of these teams (or wait for them to be made) just so Hulk can beat the pulp outta them all. ;)

Value: 9/10 - Theres no shortage of value for money here.   WWH has got lots of wash all over, separately tooled pieces (harness, belt & loincloth, right leather wristband), lots of specially tooled parts (gladiator sandal legs and feet, armored left arm and spiked left hand, the new head), and superb torso and leg articulation.  On top of all that, he comes with your regular figure stand.

The new figures lack the paper accessories of the ID card and the top secret letter, but if it mean the money form printing those goes into accessories.paint and tooling, then its well worth it!

Overall - 9.5/10 - Heck, WWH is probably the best Marvel Universe figure released to date--bulkier, with great tooling, great accessories, and articulation comparable to the likes of Captain America and the classic Spidey. And those guys are slimmer too, meaning that a bulky guy like WWH shouldnt be able to move the way they do, except that he can.

Compared to the Marvel Legends King Hulk, WWH has superior paint/wash and sculpt, has better articulation, and has and extra shield and stand.  The only thing that holds him back is the nonexistent grip on his weapons.  This makes him a way better figure than the 6" version, unless size matters a lot to you. ;)

My Ubuntu 12 04 Rants

Ive been using Ubuntu from past five years or so. I was young, loved fixing problems, remembering scary commands and making my system work. Now Ive finished my college, have got mouths to feed and want a decent stable OS to make my job easier. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin from scratch last month. I love the OS, love unity but here are some of my rants.

1) Background service eats too much CPU

I usually keep my laptop on idle while I lie on my bed. While doing so the first thing I noticed was my laptops fan constantly running. As you can see from the picture above, compiz, hud-service, xorg and unity-panel-service are eating half of my CPU all night long.

2) Installing indicator-network removes network-manager

This is by no means Ubuntus fault. You need to be careful while using commands like apt-get and specially when you use any sudo command. In my case, I wanted to install weather indicator. While doing so I discovered indicator-network. Just out of curiosity I installed it. apt-get gave me very clear warning that it will remove network-manager. But I didnt notice it. Had I been playing with some scary package like ubuntu-desktop, linux-kernel, nvidia-* I swear I d have read every line of the apt-get message. But I was just installing an indicator, what harm could it bring, right? Unfortunately the indicator-network turns out to be software in alpha stage. I dont have LAN internet, it couldnt connect to my WiFi and it didnt detect my mobile Internet.

So to sum it up, installing indicator-network removed critical component of my system(Network Manager). After that it failed to perform any network operation leaving me without Internet. I couldnt install network-manager back without Internet.

3) Cant view high resolution photographs

No, I didnt blacked out the above image. Thats exactly what happens when I try to see high resolution photos. The image viewer just displays black rectangle while it eats very high CPU(eog is eye of gnome the default image viewer).

4) Cant add exception in global proxy setting

I like to have ugly looking tool rather than fancy one that comes with half the functionality. This is exactly what happened with network proxy tool. I can configure proxy setting but for love of god cant add exception. No matter how shiny the new tool is there is no way to add ignored host in proxy.

5) Empathy eats 100% CPU

I gave empathy one  more chance before installing pidgin. Turns out to be bad decision. Got some network problem and the program hung eating 100% CPU. And by that I dont mean it used 100% CPU for few seconds and crashed. Nope, it just kept eating 100% CPU making my laptop hot as hell. apt-get remove telepathy* empathy* libtelepathy* and apt-get install pidgin was the only solution. So no screenshot :D.

6) Constant crashes

Crashes like these are fair and common.

7) App switching confusion

Im using a program called shutter to edit screenshot for this blog post. After taking screenshot I click the edit button which opens a new window with the screenshot on edit mode. Mind that the edit window is opened on top of existing window not two separate windows. That means I cant use the original window without closing the edit window. Just like a dialog box. But the apps icon on launcher shows indicator for two windows. If I click it, it shows both the window in preview mode. But clicking the original window opens the edit mode window not the original window.

8) Cant close window with middle click

Earlier it was very easy to close Windows when I had one too many opened windows. Clicking the icon on launcher would show all the windows in nice big preview mode. I could then click on the one I want to work on or middle click on the one I would no more need, one by one. Now I have to select the unneeded window to bring it in front, close it, again click on the launcher for other windows, click to select and close it and repeat.

9) Cant remove music, pictures, videos etc from nautilus bookmark

I dont need them, what I need Ill bookmark them myself. This only creates confusion. And I cant remove them.  Further more look at the inconsistency. If I use open dialog box from any program, look at the items here. Now here is only home folder, desktop, filesystem and other partitions. What happened to music and videos and stuff?

10) Drag and Drop

I like to drag files and drop it in my bookmarks folder for them to copy or move. I like to drag files and move them on top of applications for them to open. But Im not finding it natural with current Ubuntu. It sometimes work sometimes I cant find the expected behavior. Or maybe Im too confused.

11) Printing confusion

This one just ended up here. I had to print one file for a friend of mine while writing this and discovered this minor annoyance.

I had to print on both sides of the paper. IIRC on Windows OS the option is on main page. I mean I can choose to print all pages, current page, pages, odd pages or even pages. But while printing today I discovered that to print odd/even pages the option is in second tab. Now before submitting the print job my option selection stands as print all pages and print even sheets. What will it do, will it print all pages or print all even sheets? Confusing. Also other problems I have with printer is
  1. If I cancel any printing job, the printer will stop printing at the very moment. Not after the current page is finishes printing. So Ill end up with half printed page and paper jam.
  2. If I forget to plug printers USB cable to computer, it doesnt give any message just silently fails to print.
  3. No message if printer is turned off. Again fails silently to print.
12) Wireless Key havoc

Ive to rely on couple of my neighbors for Internet. Yes its bad but to my defense I only use their connection for tunneling and setting up Internet requires at least $100. Most of the connection are pretty poor and the condition becomes worst at day time. Its quite difficult to get connected and there is high chance of getting disconnected. The problem is every two minutes or so Network Manager pops up asking for wireless key. I might be doing some work, watching movie in full screen or writing this blog post, the dialog box comes stealing focus and disturbing. There is no way to tell the key is correct, just the connection is poor, just keep trying with this key and dont bother me.

13) Eclipse and Ubuntu theme

I use Eclipse to do Android development. But Eclipse color mapping and Ubuntu themes doesnt agree always. For eg: in the picture above the selected handy tips that eclipse generated is on white background and whit text font with light highlight making it difficult to read.

14) Ubuntu names

Yes it was fun when I was young. It was even fun to play mind game when I was alone by trying to recall all the Ubuntu names and version. But now its gotten too much for me. "Oneiric Ocelot", "Precise Pangolin", "Quantal Quetzal", English being second language to me, how am I suppose to remember this. If I dont need to remember this whats the use of the "name"?

15) Brasero stuck at "creating image checksum"

So I had to burn CD at office and was in kind of in hurry to give the CD. But unfortunately burning CD will fail in Ubuntu Linux. There is this thread at Ubuntu forums where people has suggested to disable image checksum plugin and install missing package. But the question is how can a LTS stable release can come with such kind of a bug? Can a normal computer user figure out the problem, Google it and stumble on the Ubuntu thread and apply the solution?
