What do Robin, Killer Moth and Kalibak have in common? Well, nothing really.

Except this action figure strip!

Enjoy. :)

DCUC Superman Red and Blue

These two characters are the perfect example of when a good idea is poorly executed. Heres what the back of his box reads:

The funny thing is, thats not how it happened. According to the infinite wisdom of comic books, Superman Blue (or Electric Blue Superman) came to be when Supes’ powers started “evolving” into pure energy and his body eventually became unstable. So a containment suit was used to keep him in a solid state. The result was a new costume, blue “skin” and energy based powers. Blue Supes found that he could turn these powers “off”, and that he would be completely human when that happened.

However, to make a bad idea even worse, Cyborg Superman, or Hank Henshaw, trapped Supes in an “energy containment structure” and literally dissipated him. So Hank leaves but the energy reforms moments after.

Except this time, a red stream of energy reappears in addition to the original blue stream. So both form Supermen, and both, of course, believe they were the original Superman.

Red was rash and Blue was calm, while every one of their readers (I somehow avoided being one) was bored. So what did they do? They had them collide and BOOM(s), the original Superman was back.

Despite their obviously craptastic story, the designs of the two Supermen are both actually quite appealing. And just like their characters, their DCUC toy counterparts are so wonderful, but yet so, so flawed. Just check out the melted hole bottom left of this MISB Superman Blues "s" shield.

Even the guy who sold me this conceded that the quality control for the early DCUC waves was pretty bad, so much so that he gave me a loose Superman Blue for buying Supes Red, Blue, and Hawkgirl from him. So I was more than happy to be getting 4 figures for the price of 3. But whaddaya know, the loose Supes also had two glaring defects: A really ill-fitting seam and a warped right foot.

And the paint on these guys are also seriously not the best quality. Chipped paint/smudging/spillover near the joints and seams just make the toys a little less appealing up close.

The accessories also arent the best, with detachable lightning for the wrists/fists that dont seem to want to stay in place for long. The lightning on their back that forms an energy S shield is not removable, but you can always modify that--itll peg on perfectly even without glue.

As for Red, he doesnt have the seam and foot problems Blue has, but he did have 2 very sticky/tight leg/hip joints. Both legs felt like their pegs werent rotating correctly in his hip. But after much coaxing and cajoling, the left peg became unstuck. The right leg is still refusing to respond, so Superman Red is sorta lame right now.

But I understand these problems are inherent to the early waves of this line, and these guys being wave 2 figures, would suffer from an ailment or two. Because honestly, even with all the defects, I still found posing/playing with them quite enjoyable.

And while Red is the rarer variant of the two, both of them are not just straight repaints. In fact, Blues head looks like the standard Supes head sculpted with headgear and hair. Reds hair is similarly sculpted, but hes got a grimace on his face that makes him unique when compared to all the other DCUC Supermen (Blue suit original, Black Suit, and Brianiac 2-pack).

Now, why couldnt they use this face sculpt for one of the other Supermen? The dopey face on long-haired versions works on Superman Blue, but on the rest, the expression just seems so lost. Its so much better when an action figure has an opinion, in this case a facial opinion. :P

Time to rate em both!

Aesthetics: 8.5/10 - The points here are for the bold colours and the design of the character. The sculpt is also excellent. Im particularly pleased by the differing heads. But poor paint, dodgy seams and chips/spill overs bring this score down.

Poseability: 9/10 - Like it or not, theyre DCUC figures, and these have standards, like the 23 points of articulation. The only bad thing for these guys is Reds stuck left/hip. I may have to perform surgery. :(

Fun: 9.5 - One without the other would just be very meh. But both of em together--Are you kidding? :) They make for great posing opposite one another.

Value: 8/10 - If I had known that the quality of these early waves are as bad they are, I might have held off on getting these two. But they were a good deal and S$55 for 2, ONLY if they didnt have major flaws. But in this case my MISB Blue has a serious hole on his costume, and his replacement had seam trouble at the thigh. Reds got bigger issues with the unrelenting right leg joint.

And while its cool to have the electric "S" shields on their backs, it wouldve been much cooler if they werent glued on.

Overall: 8.75 - I really like this toy. But somehow, every time I play with it I seem to notice a new flaw, a paint chip here, a smudge there. The wrist lightning issue is also really a problem for me. I mean, who likes equipment that keeps falling out of theyre hands. And Im also thinking its no fun to get one of these Supes without the other. They should have done them both as a 2 pack exclusive somewhere. But as is, if you can still find em, you should grab em, especially the Superman fans!

DCUC Wave 10 Joker Terror of Photography!

We all know the Joker as this hyper-active, over-imaginative, laughing maniac who has penchant for being criminally cruel.

Well, hes no different in his plastic form, the rascal.

But the Jokers definitely got to to be the pic of DCUC Wave 10 and perhaps even the last 3 waves before that.  Why?  Because he fulfills everything an action figure should have: hes got an excellent sculpt, a great paint job, and hes got accessories in spades. Heh.

Although Wave 10 may be a Walmart Exclusive, its readily available here in Singapore all the way in Southeast Asia.  The only thing is that youd have to pay a premium for these 7 figures, anywhere from between S$290-S$500 (US$207-USS357).  That works out to be between US$30-US$51 per figure.  Considering DCUC retails for US$18 per fig, thats a huge, and I mean huge markup. So what do I do in my desperation to own the Joker, Powergirl, and Man-Bat?  Rely on the old faithful internet, of course!

I was only interested in getting these three characters from the wave and I didnt really want the Collect and Connect Imperiex, despite him being a Superman villian.  Ideally Id want them loose and complete with accessories (Ok, so Powergirl has none but as everyone knows, shes plentiful in other areas. :P)

*See how the Joker cant keep still, even in plastic form.

Lo and behold echobasecollectibles on the evil auction site by the bay, who had all of them going exactly that way.  And by the looks of it not many were interested to pay the S$27 I was willing to part with to get them loose.  So 10 days later I received a nice, well-packed and slim package that fit in my mailbox and there they were: Joker, PG, and Man-Bat, along with the Walmart exclusive 5-pack Two-Face and Catwoman.  All in all it only cost me $100 US including s/h.  For this I have to give a shout out to echobasecollectibles, who was not only honest on the shipping, but even took a hit with the s/h discounts he offered. Kudos, man. :)

So heres how the Joker turned out in review:

Like: The paint job on him is really sharp, especially on his face. Just look at that crazy smile!  They did an excellent job on his pinstripes on his pants, his snazzy shoes, as well as his flower on his coat.

Special mention has to go to Jokers teeth: theyre just the right shade of crazy off-white with a nice yellow/brown wash.  The paint on his hair, lips and eyes, too are bright and brilliant.  And the paint job extends to his accessories too.  His set of card and the fish are pretty small, yet theyve not neglected to paint a joker on one and the lips and eyes on the other.

Like: The sculpt, which is a brand new one.  From the coat, to the tie to the flower, and to his head--as far as I know they didnt re-use any of the old DCSH figure parts.  I love sleeves of his coat because of the subtle creases and folds.  I especially like the head because it captures crazy, disturbed, and sinister all at one go.  Gotta love the hair sculpt too--its classic Joker!

Like: Jokers leg/hip articulation is one of the most flexible Ive seen despite the apparent rigid look of his pants.  And thats where the pleasant surprise lies--in his ability to do the splits despite looking very much like he only has swivels instead of H-joints.

Like: The accessories!  Hes probably got more than any other DCUC figure.  And none of them are plain, either.  The mallet is actually a giant head with a long nose handle, the walking stick is topped by a gold joker head, the cards are nicely detailed despite their tiny size, and the laughing fish, well, just made me laugh.
Dislike: That his stripes are only on pants.  Only an insane person would mix solids with stripes.  Oh wait, duh. ;P  But it wouldve been nice to have the Joker either all in solids or all in stripes.

Dislike: That his joints are tad loose.  It could just be that this particular Joker had looser joints than others.  But one thing was true throughout the shoot--The Joker couldnt keep still!  Look at the mischievous bastard, obviously trying to pull a fast one on a card trick (Or maybe its the effect of some of his notorious laughing gas...)

Ratings

Aesthetics: 9.7/10 – Loses points for missing pin-stripes, otherwise hes close to perfect.

Poseability: 9.7/10 – Ball head fails to be a ball head and can only swivel.  His leg joints are loose but he can achieve pretty much any pose you can want a Joker figure to achieve.

Fun: 10/10 – With the accessories and the poseabilty and that face, he puts the fun in crime-time fun for everyone! (kids, crime doesnt pay.  And is only fun for the criminally insane. Really.  No, really.)  I cant wait till I get him in an action figure comic with Batman.  Watch this space!  Heheh. ;)

Value: 8/10 – At retail hed be a 9.  At scalper prices hed be a 5. At the price I paid, hes there or thereabouts, and Im happy with the deal I got fer ol Chuckles. Theres no way Im paying the S$65 (US$46.40) they ask for him here. Hah.

Overall: 9.35/10 – Hes a real hoot if you can find him, and a holler if you paid a reasonable price.  If not hes probably gonna be the only DCUC figure Mattel will ever release for Joker!  Dear Lord, no!  But then again they did re-release Two-Face and Catwoman.  We just had to wait a few years.  For a 5-pack with yet another Superman and Batman.  That turned out to be a Walmart Exclusive.

Well, I guess the Jokes on us!!! :D

DCUC Rockin Robin!

So the past weekend was the Singapore Toy and Comic Convention, which saw me add to my collection significantly (in quality at least, if not quantity).

And it all started on Friday when my cousin Byron and I met up for our regular 2-man toy/gaming power lunch. Wed decided to check out Xeno Hobby Works at Sushine Plaza down at Bencoolen Street (Its the white building sorta facing Paradiz Centre) because Id found out that the sell loose action figures for cheap.

Well, Byron and I are currently on a DC Universe Classics frenzy, so wed decided to take the hunt down to Xeno Hobby Works. And lo and behold, what did we find? Byrons lose Blue Beetle that hed been searching high and low for, loose and complete at $18. Thats like half the retail price here. As for me, I found Robin:

He wasnt top of my "To Buy" list but there was only one of him left and at $20, complete with Bo Staff, 2 Batarangs and a stand, was a steal.

And I also guess Tim Drake is my favourite of the 3 versions of Robin, like most others. Gotta also love the costume--it makes the most sense comepared to the others

Well, this is how I found him.

But he didnt stay this way for long.

The standard DCUC 21 points of articulation goodness in his teenage-hero-sized body (As opposed to the full-sized male body and female hero molds).

What I really like about this figure is his Bo Staff! I mean yeah, Batarangs are cool, but there are only so many throwing poses you can put him in before you get bored. And check out the detail on this otherwise unifrm silver painted weapon:

I love that they took the effort to put those 2 buttons there (The staff is supposed to be collapsable and equipped with an electromagnetic pulse, just in case).

Dont worry. The batarang also got some love. ;)

And whats a Batman sidekick if he doesnt use a little hand-to-hand combat?

And whats a Batman sidekick if he doesnt hang out with Bats to practice some Kung Fu poses?

His ratings!

Costume accuracy: 9.5/10 - Spot on! Even his hair is spiked exactly as hes drawn. :)

Aesthetics: 9/10 - Love the costume, love the face, but I thought the "R" insignia could have been painted better, along with the clasps/bucckles on the front of his costume. The cape is also nice painted.

Poseability: 9.5/10 - As good as it gets for this line. And the stand that comes with him allows for some otherwise unbalanceable poses. Robin needs those poses, so its great that he got em! ;)

Overall: 9.33/10 - Solid figure, great fun to play with. And a definite must have if youve already got Batman (And who doesnt?!) ;)
